Abramoff Scandal to Touch White House?
The tentacles of the Jack Abramoff bribery scandal continue to widen and envelope more Republican officials in Washington. The former lobbyist and Tom DeLay staffer pled guilty to federal charges last year. The investigation continues to ensnare others and now a subpoena have been directed at the White House. The House Government Reform Committee (how orwellian is that name?) issued a subpoena for records according to The Washington Post. The order is for any and all records of Greenberg Taurig, the lobbying firm at the center of the controversy. It demands records of meetings involving the White House:
This is also the scandal which as involved Ralph Reed, former head of the Christian Coalition, various Indian tribes, and others, including several Congressmen. Jack Abramoff's corruption touched so many areas and people in GOP Washington it may keep prosecutors busy for several years.
In some cases, there were scores of phone calls or other contacts with the White House. It is not known whether any of those contacts resulted in improper aid to Abramoff. Several tribal representatives said they believe many contacts were with staff members at the White House office of intergovernmental affairs.
