Curt Weldon Caught Cheating
State Democrats caught Congressman Curt Weldon violating the law by using government paid and produced information on his campaign website. The Seventh CD incumbent used the head shot and biography from his Congressional website on his campaign site, a violation of campaign finance law.
“This is an obvious campaign violation, as public resources cannot be used for political purposes,” T.J. Rooney, the chairman of the Democratic Party in Pennsylvania, wrote in a letter yesterday to House Administration Committee Chairman Vernon Ehlers (R-Mich.). “Rep. Weldon and his staff should have a better understanding of the need to have a distinct separation of political and governmental entities.”
The House ethics committee’s campaign booklet states that the guiding principle for lawmakers is that “official resources of the House must be used for the performance of official business of the House, and hence those resources may not be used for campaign or political purposes. … Government funds should not be spent to help incumbents gain reelection.”
