Debate Coverage
"I think his father would be very upset if he were alive today and heard him be supportive," said Santorum. Casey's father, the late Pennsylvania Gov. Robert P. Casey, was a staunch anti-abortion advocate.
I couldn't believe Casey allowed Santorum to attack him this way and not even respond. He should have been outraged by this comment and called the Senator for making such a low blow. This was a great time for a rendition of "I knew my father and you didn't. He would be outraged at your lies in support for this illegal war" or some such similar response. Bobby simply sat there and let the comment hit. Think Progress has the clip.
The media is pointing out Santorum's errors and factual misstatements, something Casey failed to do in the debate.
He also allowed Rick to drag in the pay raise issue. A state matter that has tremendous influence with the electorate this year it has no bearing on the Senate race. Nevertheless Casey is allowing Santorum to make it an issue. He needs a better repsonse than sitting there meekly, saying "I follwed the law." Santorum ha sno repsect for law, his enthusiastic support for the illegal wiretaps illustrates that. Saying you were following the law doesn't faze him. Explaining it was passed by the legislature and signed by the Governor and there was nothing the Treasurer could do unless a court declared it unconstitutional would settle the issue.
The exchange:
"You didn't do anything when you could have stopped it, Bob. Why didn't you try to stop it?" Santorum said.
"I was following the law, Rick," Casey said.
The next debate is scheduled for October 13th. I hope the Casey campaign decides to do some preparation for that one. It was painfully obvious this morning that they didn't do anything for today's session. Heck, Casey even said he'd vote for one of Santorum's bills. Did you see the shit eating grin Santorum had at that response? Expect to see it in an upcoming commercial.
