Looking under the Wrong Rock
It seems odd to me that we're fussing about in the Middle East and Afghanistan when all the while, quietly, patiently, the government of North Korea has been developing their missile capability (to go along with their nuclear capability). Now here we are on the actual verge of them testing a long range missle with potential to reach the United States west coast and what is our response. Condy Rice wags her finger and says "don't you do it". Oh yeah...that'll get their attention.
We muck about with people who have no WMD's and ignore the people who do and can launch them against us and our Pacific allies. Can you imagine the worldwide response (military and economic) if North Korea were to drop any size nuclear device on...say Tokyo...or Seoul.
The Chinese have to be getting nervous at this point...the leaders of North Korea do not exactly have a reputation of being rational, logical people. We already know that the Japanese are nervous.
So what will the U.S. response be if this missle is tested successfully? What can we do to counter the North Korean threat? I suspect we would want to base nukes in either Japan or South Korea. The Chinese and the Russians are not going to be happy about THAT idea. Not to mention that I suspect the North Koreans may choose to view that as a reason for a first strike.
Frankly, we let the ball get away from us here. Now the lunatics are running the asylum and they really DO have WMD's.
