He Said, They Said...
Since the formation of Israel in May 1948 the country has practically been in a perpetual state of readiness against actual war or guerilla attacks. Now with the most recent provocation by Hezbollah kidnapping 2 Israeli soldiers, the country is pressing it's power in a very assertive and offensive manner.
I do not deny Israel's right to defend itself but Israel needs to really grasp and understand that the establishment of their country did happen at the cost of Palestine. I know the history is far more complicated than that and it's wrapped up with ancient religious texts too. But, the fact is, that prior to May 1948, Palestine existed under U.N. organization and a British administration.
Both parties need to realize that they are not going to get everything they want in a settlement to this issue. The Palestinians have a right to a homeland that they can turn into a viable country and economy but they have to stop supporting guerilla groups that attack Israel using terrorist tactics. The Palestinian people need to tell Hamas and Hezbollah that enough is enough and that they want to give peace a chance.
Israel, on the other hand, has to shelve the "our way or not at all" attitude with the Palestinans and its neighbors. Israel should not be blockading Lebanon and attacking the Beirut airport. Those actions are too provocative. They are practically inviting Syria to respond. There's enough turmoil in the region with our President and 'his head up his ass' policies in Iraq. The actions of Israel may spur Iran to continue their nuclear program using the argument that they will need to defend themselves from potential Israeli aggression or to come to the aid of their Arab neighbors under attack from Israel. Israeli settlers are going to have to give some too.
I can't help feeling that neither side is seeking a solution because neither side really WANTS a solution. If that's true, then it's like smoking...Until you WANT to quit, you're not going to quit.
Both sides need to realize that it's going to take hard work to resolve the conflict. Both sides need to muzzle their extremists. Both sides need to compromise.
Get it together guys. Three major religions sprang from this area of the world. All three have loving your neighbor and living peaceably with others as major tenets of their faith. None of them seems to have read their religious texts lately.
None of them seems to have any faith in their God...or themselves.
