GOP Using Lack of Border Security as an Issue???

The Washington Post has an article this morning about the GOP using the lack of border security to gain votes. Huh???? The same Republican majority in Washington that has utterly failed to secure the border almost five years after September 11th wants to gain from this abysmal failure? Am I living in some sort of parallel universe where white is black and black is white? Here's a quote from the story:

But many Republicans believe, in a year when many national trends are not blowing their way, that it is also the safer position in a general election.

It is a counterintuitive strategy: The way to win a swing district is not with a campaign aimed at swing voters. Instead, the goal is to motivate conservatives with anti-illegal-immigration appeals, hoping they overcome their disenchantment with GOP policies in Washington.

This only works until some Democrat points out that, five years after the attacks our borders remain basically open. Oh, and that Republicans control Congress and the White House and, therefore, are responsible for this state of affairs. Talk about creating an issue that'll backfire on you!

Of course, no one has yet established that any terrorist has come across, or tried to come across, the border with Mexico. If it's homeland security that's the issue, our border with Mexico isn't where we need to expend the effort. That would be the border with Canada. Canada is where the millenium bombers came across in their effort to blow up LAX. Canada is where a cabal of terrorists was recently uncovered and arrested. Why would a terrorist try coming from Mexico when it's mush easier and safer through our northern neighbor? Plus you don't have to trek across a large desert.
