Plan B and Rick Santorum

The FDA approved Plan B yesterday for over the counter sales. I didn't comment on this because I figured it was no big deal. Plan B is nothing more than emergency contraception. It does NOT terminate pregnancy. This simply means women over 18 will not need to pay for a doctor's visit prior to purchasing the item from a pharmacist.

Then I read some comments from Senator Rick Sanitorium in this morning's newspaper. Is this man another moron? Here's what he told a Reading Eagle reporter yesterday (no link since it isn't on their online edition):

"Particularly, the impact of potentially causing spontaneous abortions and other health complications."

Let's repeat: Emergency contraception does NOT terminate pregancy. Maybe Tricky Ricky the idiot didn't hear us yet. Let's repeat it again but louder this time:

EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION DOES NOT TERMINATE PREGNANCY.

Maybe the asshole should learn the facts before he begins spouting his theological idiocy. Plan B is not RU 486. They are completely different medicines and work in completely different ways. Of course Sanitorium is someone who opposes ALL birth control and all methods of sexual activities not resulting in procreation so I guess he doesn't need to gather the facts before he illustrates his ignorance. As far as he's concerned it's all the same. Here's how it works:

Plan B works through delaying or preventing ovulation, by interfering with fertilization (inhibiting the movement of the egg or the sperm through the fallopian tube), and may inhibit implantation by altering the lining of the uterus. It is not effective if the process of implantation has begun. Plan B will NOT cause a miscarriage. Plan B does not provide any protection or treatment against sexually transmitted infections. Pregnancies occurring despite treatment do not have an increased risk of adverse outcome.

In other words it works the same as any other contraceptive. Plan B simply provides a large emergency dosage. It does not cause abortions, spontaneous or otherwise.

This story does tell us a lot about Tricky Ricky. It reminds us he spouts off on subjects before getting the facts. Remember his support for the war in Iraq? He ignored the facts then too. It reminds us he sees facts as he WANTS them to be, not as they are. Remember Terri Schiavo? That case also reminds us he wants the federal government making our most difficult family decisions for us.

It reminds us Rick Santorum wants to be in our bedrooms. He wants to dictate how we have sexual relations. He does not want anyone using any form of contraception. He does not want us doing anything sexually other than making babies. He wants to criminalize any other sexual activity.

Is this what you want? It's your decision on November 7th.
