Bush Is a Uniter Remember?
Remember George W. Bush's campaign promise of 2000? I'm a uniter, not a divider? Now he's even dividing his own Republican Party. His insistance that America divest itself of all that has made it great, of all moral authority, of standing as a beacon of freedom and liberty, is causing a split even among his supporters. This insane proposal to legalize torture does all that and has significant opposition. I suppose the real question is how and why ANYONE supports the measure.
I think the clearest signal of what this legislation is about is one provision: exempting Americans from prosecution for war crimes. Why would the bill need this if we weren't involved in torture (as Bush claimed just last week) or have no plans to engage in torture? The only reason for inserting that protection is because certain people are looking for legal protection against being prosecuted for war crimes. George W. Bush being at the top of the list.
Passage of this bill means trashing everything America has stood for for 150 years. It means the terrorists won because the America they set out to destroy detroyed itself.
Perhaps George W. Bush will achieve one milestone before the end of his term: he will united the country. United everyone against his Administration. Meanwhile he's already united the rest of the world against us.
This is incredible considering the mood after September 11th. The country was united, the world was one behind us. Flags flew from every home, every porch. No one doubted the need to go after Osama and the Taliban. The world supported the effort.
What happened? Iraq.
Iraq changed everything, not 9/11. Iraq changed everything because it was an imperialistic invasion of another country to exploit its resources. Because of all the lies Bushco used to convince gullible idiots it was part of the war on terror. Because of Gitmo, Abu Ghraib, secret prisons, extraordinary renditions, the Patriot Act, NSA wiretapping, and wmd's.
Those are what changed America and turned the world against us. Now Bush wants to retroactively legalize his unconstitutional, illegal actions. He seeks to immunize himself and his henchmen from war crimes trials. I'm sorry sir, no deal. This isn't what America is about, what America is and always will be. You did your dirty deeds in our name, you besmudged America's reputation, our historical heritage. Now you must pay the price as other war criminals have.
