Kudos to John Baer

John Baer, columnist for The Philadelphia Daily News and blogger, sticks a fork in the marriage debate with some skewering words for all those who supported this massive waste of time and resources. He notes on eof the more senseless arguments put forth for this legislation:

And an evidently oxygen-deprived Sen. Jane Orie, a Pittsburgh Republican, says if we don't ban gay marriage, we could have fathers marrying daughters and uncles marrying aunts.

So much for protecting "traditional marriage." We cannot allow our aunts and uncles to get married, can we? The solution to all this is very simple: you define marriage as a legal union between two unrelated persons of consenting age. Very simple, no incest, no polygamy, no man on dog relationships. No problems.

If these bigots were all that concerned they'd be introducing an amendment banning divorce. Of course that really doesn't have anything to do with their real agenda. The voter backlash at the polls would also be devastating. No, the idea here is to get the Republican base, all their home grown bigots, to the polls in November by putting gays and lesbians on the chopping block.

I really loved this passage:

How cheap and pandering for the president of the United States to promote it, as he did again earlier this month. How it's clearly a GOP political tool to drive white evangelicals to the polls in rural districts in '08. How it's little more than a dressed-up version of the Rev. Fred Phelps' "God hates fags" campaign.
