Is Bush Afraid of War Crimes Prosecutions?
The Bush Administration has sent proposed legislation to Congress seeking to retroactively cover Administration officials for war crimes. They must have suddenly become aware that torture is illegal. This is another legal loophole they're trying to jump through to mitigate their past actions. The humiliation of prisoners at Abu Ghraib and Gitmo, among other sites, violates laws and treaties and could subject them to prosecution of war crimes.
Unfortunately (for them) no legislation passed by Congress can nullify their obligations under international treaties prohibiting such actions and behavior. These officials could be subject to arrest and prosecution if they ever travel outside the country.
