NRCC Poll Has Gerlach Way Ahead

PoliticsPA is showing an internal NRCC (National Republican Congressional Campaign) poll showing the incumbent ahead 47%-36% in the 6th District. The 11 point spread is quite surprising though not a shock to me. I can't begin to count the number of loyal, dedicated progressive Democrats who have come to me the past six months complaining about Lois' campaign. When I attempted to explain this to the campaign they bit my head off. I've heard this has happened to others. Feedback doesn't exist for these people. They're in their campaign bubble and no one better challenge their perceptions.

The interesting statistic is the fact 60% of the 400 people polled said they agreed with th estatement that "Lois Murphy is a liberal." Well, she is. Of course there's nothing wrong with being a liberal.

We liberals have a very proud tradition and a long rcord of accomplishment. We created the 40 hour workweek and weekends. We ended sweatshops and child labor. We insisted on safe working conditions and overtime pay. We created Social Security and Medicare. We insisted that your food be safe to eat, your water safe to drink, and your earth be safe for farming and play. We've protected the environment and insisted on a strong national defense and a sane and coherent strategic national security policy.

Lois Murphy, like all of us, should be proud to say she's a liberal. We support universal health care for all making our businesses competitive in the global economy, living wages for hard working Americans and to lower the cost of entitlement programs, and equal rights and opportunity for ALL Americans. There's nothing wrong with being a liberal.

If 60% of those in the District already consider Ms. Murphy a liberal she should adopt a liberal platform. So far she hasn't and that's cost her a LOT of support. Instead of playing to the center, which doesn't contribute or volunteer, she should shore up her liberal base.

As far as Gerlach goes, his extremist, hate filled, fact challenged mailings have shown his over the top Taliban ad of 2004 was no anomaly. This man is vicious and is running a vicious, scorched earth campaign. He's also turned off a lot of his supporters and ticked people off. He has some very serious ethical issues and has taken money from very questionable sources. His FEC reports should be filed in the fiction section of Borders. Or perhaps the fantasy department. Saying you raised $2.2 million more than you actually did certainly qualifies as fantasy in my book.

This has been a very negative campaign by both parties. Both have spent massive amounts of time trying to define the opponent and little defining themselves. I suspect most voters don't like either one at this point. It's time for some warm and fuzzy voter contact in the Sixth if either Gerlach or Murphy hope to connect with the voters.
