Baghdad Chaos Increases

Remember how killing Zarqwari was going to improve the situation in Iraq? Remember how capturing Saddam was going to mark a distinct change? Remember how the elections would herald a historic new beginning? How about that widely publicized mobilization recently to restore law and order in Baghdad? How about Dick Cheney saying the insurgency was in its "last throes?"

Violence in Baghdad is up 40%. Just when you thought conditions there couldn't get worse. Sunnis killing Shias, Shias executing Sunnis. Now Turkey is threatening to invade the Kurdish area of northern Iraq and annex the territory.

U.S. military commanders acknowledge that the Iraqi government's campaign
to bring security to Baghdad is an abject failure. Violence in the capital has
risen by about 40 percent in the past five days alone.

But folks, there's no civil war going on there. Trust me, our government would never lie to us about something that serious.
