Guns.....again!

I hear tell that recently at a meeting in Reading, my favorite Senator O'Pake spoke from prepared comments concerning the recent shooting and death of a Reading Police Office Scott Wertz. I'm told that the Senator said that we don't need any new laws but that we need to enforce the ones we have better.

Today, a little blurb pops up on my computer:

Gunfire killed man, wounds 2 in city
By Kori Walter
Reading Eagle

Gunmen sprayed the 100 block of South Ninth Street with bullets Friday night, killing one man, wounding another and grazing a 5-year-old boy, police said.

Police responded shortly after 9 p.m. and found a black man who had been shot several times lying on the sidewalk outside 113 S. Ninth St., just south of Franklin Street.

The identity of the man killed was not available late Friday.

A bullet grazed the chest of Dwight U. Basnight, 5, of the 100 block of South 10th Street, officials said.

Another man dead, a man wounded and a 5 year old child caught in the middle. Young Mr. Basnight is a very lucky young man and I'm glad for him and his family.

Exactly how many people need to die, my dear Senator, before you decide that handguns should be eliminated? How many children need to get shot, wounded, or (heaven forbid) worse?

Obviously the current laws aren't working since the criminals are now shooting the very people charged with enforcing those laws...the police.

You can eliminate handguns and assualt weapons and still not violate the 2nd Amendment. Handguns kill people. Assault weapons kill people. Neither are widely used for hunting so why MUST we allow their sale?

Let me try to explain it this way. We have a freedom of speech but that doesn't mean you can yell 'fire' in a crowded theatre. You have a freedom to own guns, but that doesn't mean we can't put some restrictions on that too.

Something is wrong when we say gun ownership is more important than people's lives.
I trust the Senator will re-examine his position in light of this most recent incident.

And Senator, I think John would gladly open the blog to you for a rebuttal on this topic or any other that you would care to address.

Thanks for reading Senator!
