Cheney Refuses to Answer Questions About Plamegate

Vice President Dick Cheney appeared on Meet the Press this morning and was grilled by Tim Russert. Think Progress has video about the Veep lying, once again, about links between Iraq and 9/11. Russert finally made him admit there were none. He seems to continue being under the delusion that Abu al Zarqwari and Saddam were colluding. Why then was Zarqwari afraid to leave his hideout in an area completely controlled by Iran? Why was he afraid to be in Iraq? Of course he was just a minor player at the time anyway and of no real concern to anyone. It was our invasion which radicalized the man against us. It was the Bush Administration that gave him the opportunity to be a hero and martyr.

He also continues to hang onto the delusion the insurgency is in its "last throes." After making that comment on MTP fifteen months ago and watching as the insurgency continue to spiral in its violence and destruction he refused to retract the comment this morning. Maybe he's just confused and thinks any chance of victory in Iraq is in its last throes.

Toward the end of the interview Russert brought up the issue of Valerie Plame and Cheney's role in jeopardizing our national security. He refused to answer any of the questions. He attempted to justify this by saying he may be a witness in an upcoming civil suit. What a completely lame excuse. He's the Vice President and he was involved in a very serious breach of national security. Either he answers these questions or resign. Americans deserve to have the answers.

It was Cheney's Chief of Staff who was indicted for obstruction of justice and perjury during the investigation into who leaked Plame's identity and status as a CIA agent to Robert Novak. At the time she was outed Plame was head of the CIA's Joint Task Force on Iraq. This means she was heading the team trying to determine if Iraq had wmd's.

No wonder Cheney thought he had to destroy this woman. She was a threat to his war in Iraq. If she and her team were able to prove Saddam no longer had wmd's (which is what the CIA determined) Cheney had to destroy her. Add to that the fact her husband Joseph Wilson had just exposed President Bush as a liar and Cheney's plan for invading Iraq was in doubt. He had to do something.

The fact he was sacrificing national security was irrelevant. His refusal to answer Tim Russert's questions is very disturbing. The questions don't get any more important than why we went to war and whether someone committed treason. The fact he MAY be a witness in a trial is irrelevant. Only if Cheney were a defendant would this be a valid excuse.

Americans deserve answers to these questions. Cheney must answer them. If he committed treason we need to know why.
