State Senate Approves Discrimination

The Pennsylvania State Senate yesterday approved writing discrimination into the Commonwealth's constitution by a 38-12 vote. I'm ashamed to say my senator Mike O'Pake supported this measure. I will never support or vote for him again. Coupled with his support for last year's pay raise grab it's time for my senator to move on.

O'Pake was quoted in this morning's Reading Eagle as trying to justify his vote for bigotry by reasoning that it's up to the voters to decide the issue. No Mike, it's your job. This is a republic not a direct democracy. We elected you to represent us in Harrisburg and make the correct decisions for us on these matters. If you want to abdicate that responsibility then resign. Now.

Why not also put the rights of women up to a referendum. Ot African Americans. Let's allow the voters to decide who is allowed which constitutional rights and who isn't. This rationale is absurd. Every legislator who voted for this and who has divorced, committed adultery, is in the closet, or has otherwise voted in a hypocritical manner will be exposed as such. You are fair game now because your vote on this matter makes that information newsworthy. The voters have the right to know which supporters of "traditional marriage" have skeletons in their own closets.
